Whole Bean vs Ground Coffee: How to Choose
Choose whole bean coffee for control over grind size, or ground coffee to skip grinding. The right format depends on your equipment, brewing method and routine.
What is the difference between whole bean and ground coffee?
Whole bean coffee is roasted coffee that you grind before brewing. Ground coffee is already milled. Iron Tide's standard 12 oz coffees offer both choices on the same product page, so you can choose a roast and then select Whole Bean or Ground.
Choose whole bean when grind control matters
You will need a grinder. Grind the amount you intend to brew, and match the grind setting to your brewer's directions. Whole beans give you flexibility when your method calls for a particular grind, such as French press, pour-over or espresso. Grind size and roast level are separate choices.
Choose ground coffee for a simpler routine
Ground coffee saves the grinding step. Follow your brewer's instructions for the coffee amount, water and brewing time. Check whether the product's grind suits your equipment; if you need close control over grind size, choose whole bean and grind it yourself.
Shop ground coffee. Canopy Watch mushroom coffee is supplied ground.
Which format should I choose for my brewer?
- French press: whole bean lets you choose the grind your brewer recommends.
- Pour-over: whole bean gives you room to adjust the grind to the filter and brewer; check the grind requirements if choosing ground.
- Drip coffee maker: ground coffee is convenient when its grind fits your machine. Whole bean also works if you grind it for that brewer.
- Espresso: whole bean gives you control to dial in your grinder and machine. Check your equipment's requirements before choosing a pre-ground option.
- Pod brewer: choose coffee pods that match your brewer's requirements rather than putting loose beans or grounds into a pod system.
Pick the roast after choosing your format
For fruit and citrus, try First Light light roast. For a balanced medium roast, start with Harborbound. For a full-bodied dark roast with chocolate notes, try Blackwater. Quietwatch is the Indonesian medium-roast decaf option.

Want to prepare a cup without grinding or brewing grounds?
Instant coffee is prepared with hot water following package directions. Coffee pods require a compatible pod brewer. These are separate preparation formats from the whole bean and ground 12 oz coffees.
